How To DIY Install Your TV Mount
A traditional TV wall mount is a device that is used to securely attach a television to a wall. It typically consists of a bracket that is attached to the back of the TV, and a mounting plate that is attached to the wall, most people know this. Duh...!
However, to install a traditional TV wall mount on a drywall, you will need first-hand experience with handyman work. Unfortunately, most of us never used a drill, not to mention, use it properly, and more specifically on a drywall. But if you are experienced with doing some handyman work you will have to follow these steps:
Choose the right mount for your TV. Make sure that the mount is designed to hold the weight and size of your TV.
Choose the location for the mount. Consider the height of the TV, the distance from the viewing area, and the location of outlets and cables.
Locate the wall studs. Use a stud finder to locate the wall studs behind the drywall. The mount will need to be attached to these studs to support the weight of the TV.
Assemble the mount. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to assemble the mount.
Install the mounting plate. Hold the mounting plate against the wall, and use a level to make sure it is straight.
Drill pilot holes. Use a drill and a 1/8-inch bit to drill pilot holes at the marked locations.
Attach the mounting plate to the wall.
Attach the bracket to the TV.
Hang the TV on the mount.
No wonder why most of us use a handyman, and even if you find a good one, you should expect to pay $100 per TV. Additionally, what if there are not studs in the living room? It gets even more complicated from there.
We ran into HangSmart from a few Facebook & TikTok ads. They claim to solve all the problems one may have when attempting to install a TV mount.
HangSmart is currently the worlds smallest TV wall mount.
It's fully DIY,
No Stud needed
No experience required
No measurements needed
In other words... too good to be true! So we tried it.
First with our OLD 77 inch TV, one that doesn't even exist today, that weighs probably triple the weight any new TV on the market weighs today, but still less than 150 pounds which is the HangSmart manufacture limit. Long story short - IT WORKS.
But how is it possible for such a small mount to hold such heavy weight on drywall (or plaster walls)? Especially, when they claim that NO STUDS are needed whatsoever? We have decided to further investigation after a successful installation of HangSmart, which impressed us a lot but kept us wondering - HOW? HOW IS IT POSSIBLE?
It's Simple Physics!
Toe-nail concept refers to the way in which HangSmart TV is mounted on the wall. This innovative wall mount uses a unique "toe-nail" design that allows it to be securely affixed to drywall without the need for studs and that can support weight of up to 150 pounds.
So first, some basic knowledge about Toenailing, what is it exactly?
Toenailing is the process of driving a nail at a 45-degree angle to fasten two pieces of wood or drywall together, typically with their grains perpendicular. The physics behind the toe-nail concept is based on the principle of tension and force. Usually on drywall, this concept was used to hang mirrors or pictures up to certain weight (Definitely not over 100 pounds).
Let’s see if we can give you a bit of an easier reference… The way in which the product works is through physics. The nails go in at a 45 degree angle anchoring to the wall. This creates pressure 90 degrees to the ground. The nails will NEVER move and nothing will happen to the drywall. We always encourage those that are trying to wrap their head around it to think about this scenario.
Take a wall, try to hang your body from the top of the wall with your fingers at a 180 degree angle (so going perfectly horizontally) you would fall right down.
Now…. Do the same thing, and grip the wall making your fingers curve at a 45 degree angle anchoring to the wall. You won’t fall, and nothing will happen to the wall.
When HangSmart is installed, the toe-nail is inserted into the drywall at a downward angle. This creates tension on the drywall. The secret of HangSmart is not only the concept of toenailing. It’s a combination of two additional factors:
HangSmart has a patented design of elastic but yet very strong mount, HangSmart tv mount uses four nails on each side (a total of eight nails) to create an anchor that distributes the weight evenly and downward at a 90-degree angle. This allows the TV to sit securely on top of the wall, as if it were resting on a solid surface while the elastic mount attaches itself against the wall as if it was part of it.
Two mounts are installed while using the concept of toenailing, this helps to divide the distribution of the weight of the TV evenly and create two anchors.
According to HangSmart, they have experienced zero failures with their product, and their customers are consistently impressed by its simplicity, ease of use, and elegant design. Once they give it a try, they love it and the word spreads like wildfire!
“Our goal is to drive innovation into an industry that is fairly outdated. You just cannot negate science and math when those variables are applied to make a product work. We want to give every person the ability to do the things they want to do around the house, completely on their own, and without the use of a handyman. All of our products are DIY focused with the consumer in mind."
